So is it true that this latest version of The Yardbirds is at least as good as the sixties versions, as many seem to imply? Well it was certainly time we checked them out. Finding out from my old friend Buddy that the band was playing just an hour and a half car journey away, off we set to Cheltenham.
They had a three day stint at The Painswick Squash Club". Another Yardbirds fanatic/expert John Spencer had seen them play there on the Thursday night and was VERY enthusiastic about their performance. John is certainly one guy whose words are worth making a note of.
Now, Saturday night was our night to see for ourselves. On entering the building, which is jammed with people sat at tables and mingling around the bar area, I spot Buddy, who's getting in five pints of water for the band, as it's like a sweatbox in the place. With Buddy's assistance we head backstage, for a few words with the band before they go on stage. It was like old times talking to Jim, Chris etc again. I had a few questions for Jim, which I will include later.
Before we knew it, it was time to head for the stage to start playing. With an opening number like "I'm A Man", how could they fail to make the place start jumping right from the off? Whilst the bulk of the crowd were seemingly just under some kind of hypnotic spell of the music, the rest of us were, in our own way, freaking out.
